February 10,1981 BSM endorses candidates Norberg^ Hummel TERESA BLOSSOM Staff Writer The Black Student Movenient endors ed Scott NorberR for student body presi dent and )im Hummel for Daily Tar Heel editor at its annual forum held recently. The BSM also endorsed Brenny Thompson and Debbie Mixon for presi dent and vice-president of the senior class Norberg, a sophomore, said that racism was one of the biggest problems atUNC. ■'Student Government should work for a more aggressive recruitment program of minorities, " he said. Norberg added that an increase in the number of women and black faculty was also need ed. Other candidates proposed similar ob jectives. BSM Chairperson Mark Canady said that Norberg's previous work with the Minority Advisory Program and with the development of the position of Vice- Chancellor for University Affairs show ed that Norberg was aware of problems Black students face But Canady stressed that "The deci sion reflects the voice of the general body of the BSM but not of all Black students because all Blacks are not members of the BSM.” In his prepared statement, Hummel said that one way to improve DTH coverage of the BSM and its cultural groups was to recruit more Black writers and editors. "The DTH should be known to Black students while they are freshmen and sophomores," Hummel said. He adc(ed that it was understandable for Blacks to want to write for the Black Ink but that Blacks should be awaje of the way the DTH works too. Thompson and Mixon emphasized three major points in their campaign for senior class officers. They said they want to develop a constitution, expand the in terview system to include more seniors and arrange a system for seniors to buy back robes from graduates, similar to the APO Book Co-op. Elections for all campus positions will be held February 10. Students can vote at their respective dorms or other places on campus. Tutorials resume TERESA BLOSSOM Staff Writer Weekly tutorial sessions sponsored by the Minority Advisory Program on campus resumed the last week of January and will continue throughout the semester. One afternoon session has been add ed because many freshmen indicated that the evening tutorials were not always convenient for them, according to graduate assistant Valerie Moore. The schedule of days, limes and places are: Monday 7-8:30, 4th Floor Study Room/Ehringhaus; Tuesday 7-8:30, Seminar Room/Hinton James; Wednesday 4:30-6, 221 Greenlaw and 7-8:30, Recreation Room/Morrison; Thursday 7-8:30, 221 Greenlaw. Office hours for the five graduate assistants are: Freddie Parker, Monday and Wednesday 11-12:30, Friday 10- 11:30, Harold Woodard, Monday 1- 3:30 and Wednesday 12:30-2; Rueben Young, Wednesday and Friday 1:30-4; Valerie Moore, Tuesday and Thursday 1-3; Shelia White, Tuesday and Thurs day 9:30-11:30. The graduate assistant office is on the first floor of Ehringhaus outside the information desk in an un-numbered room The door is unmarked, but a sign will be painted on the door, the dorm's area director said.
